About This Project

Jorges Salman Architects submitted a competition entry for the Sevenoaks Wildlife and Wellbeing Centre. The scheme entailed a new building which provided a connection with the nearby reservoir, the mature planting and trees, and aiming to converge the barriers between land and water. Material selection was important in creating a building which harmonised with the surroundings and provided a contemporary insertion into the site. The use of dry stone walling not only softens the impact of the new building, but also creates new avenues of wildlife shelter for local species of birds and insects alike. The concept of the scheme provides a focal meeting point and centre for learning, meditation, and use for large school groups and commercial events.

The scheme submitted by JSA was one of the 33 long-listed entries which ‘were selected for further exploration and discussion’. There were 233 submissions in total. On the 33 long-listed entries, the judging panel commented – ‘ The panel considered each of the remaining 33 and agreed that they were looking at well thought through schemes that were flexible but still retained an elegance and sophistication’
